The following description is edited from information provided by Eliane Trempe, current President of the Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association (CanTRA). She also helped to found la Fédération Québecoise d’Équitation Thérapeutique.
Everyone can become a therapeutic horseback riding instructor. The real question would be: “how to succeed in the profession of instructor in therapeutic riding?” This very special profession is addressed to individuals with a strong knowledge of the equine, natural affinities with customers and a propensity to education. It is a demanding profession that is strongly similar to a vocation. Maturity, life experience, altruistic personality and superior relational capacity are all assets in this work. Our statistics show us that about 10% of the people completing the training continue through to national certification, leading to entry into the labour market. I’ve been doing this job for almost 20 years and I wouldn’t change anything from my journey. I can assert that within the equestrian field, it is the most beautiful profession in the world.
