VOLUNTEERING

Volunteering at Hinchinbrook Farm

Volunteers make it possible to provide therapeutic riding to children with special needs and Horse Boy Method™ therapy to families dealing with Autism Spectrum Disorder.  Although most volunteers learn to work with the horses and the children, others serve on the Board of Directors, repair equipment and maintain the facility, raise funds and provide special services to Hinchinbrook Farm.

The objective of Hinchinbrook Farm is to have one trained volunteer coach working with each child who is at the facility.  Much of this time is spent on or with the horse.  (Some of the horse-connected activities include games that require the child to give verbal commands to the horse, who is trained to respond to verbal and hand signal commands.  This promotes the use of language with children who often do not communicate verbally.)

Most of the volunteers are teenagers who are perhaps going to pursue social work or psychology as a career.  Since they eventually graduate from high school and leave for university, there is turnover every year, requiring the constant provision of training in the therapeutic riding techniques to about 50 volunteers annually.

This requires 54 hours of clinics plus from 5 to 25 hours per volunteer of personal training mentoring.  Since most volunteers are high school students, we see them for 4 years at most, and then they leave for university. All those who have left have gone onto amazing lives with gifts and skills uniquely acquired here at the farm.  Because of their volunteer work here most students go on to study teaching, or health services.

Those emerging citizens who start volunteering as teenagers will always contribute to a better community for having had the support and tools to learn how to be sensitized to the needs of others.

HFS gives these students a tremendous start in their lives through the training they experience with special needs families and horses.

Become a Volunteer

If you are 14 years or older and can get yourself to our Farm in Blockhouse, you are very welcome to join the Tribe (that’s what it is called in Horse Boy Method™).  We are looking for high school and college students who are able to make a commitment to take the training (the first course lasts all day), love animals and love children.  You know they will love you back (both the animals and the children, of course).

There are always other chores to do around the Farm, so if you think you want to try us out before you learn to work with the kids, you can muck out stalls, groom the horses, clear debris from the trails, rake, paint, etc., etc.  (The jobs around here never seem to end!)

If you are of an age where we do not need to mention age, then you are ALSO welcome to join the Tribe.  It is just that you have many more choices when it comes to what you can do.  Besides learning to work with the kids, there is:

  • Some heavy maintenance that crops up regularly

  • Spring Cleaning (a little more involved than around the house) and Fall Preparation for Winter

  • Help with Fundraising

  • Serve on the Board of Directors

Some people find they just do not have the time to help out in a physical way but still want to help Hinchinbrook Farm. You can always make a donation to help us by going to the DONATE PAGE.

Our Volunteers

Hinchinbrook Farm is always looking for new volunteers who like to work with children, with horses, or both!  We also have some places for people who would like to work on therapeutic riding skills with adults who have mental or physical challenges.  Here is a list of our current volunteers who call us their Tribe.
